Waiting in Anticipation
There is a buzz in the air at Hugh Cairns School as the students and staff wait in anticipation to meet with Leah Dorion. Every class from grades K-8 has read her SYRCA Shining Willows nominated book The Giving Tree and they are looking forward to having the opportunity to learn more about the book and how our own giving tree will take shape.
In the afternoon we will kick start our project with Leah Dorion by having a school assembly. In addition to our guest Leah Dorion, we will be fortunate to have in attendance our Metis knowledge keeper Faye Maurice. Faye has been working in our school for the past few months and we have been growing the roots of understanding of the Metis people. To celebrate our work, the grade three students, accompanied by master fiddler Dallas Boyer, will share their metis jig. The assembly will also be an opportunity for our school and community to celebrate what we have been learning about Metis people and to announce our new project with Leah Dorion that will allow us to continue growing new understandings about Metis people, art, and literacy.
